It is a legal requirement for every equine registered in the UK to have a microchip (irrelevant of its age) and the legal responsibility of owners to ensure that their equine/s microchip details are recorded on the Central Equine Database (CED).
The microchip enables the identification of an equine. If it is lost/stolen and is found the microchip number can be checked on the CED by enforcement and welfare agencies to reunite the equine with its owner. The microchip also helps vets to ensure that they administer the correct treatment to the right equine and helps protect the human food chain.
